Chicago is a beautiful city, and it is also a very unique place. However over the years Chicago has been infamous for many things, some of them not being so great. What lies behind the skyscrapers and into the neighborhoods is what is most disrupted. Just like many other cities in the country and the world, the people of Chicago have had to deal with many unfortunate situations. Instead of getting support from our beloved city and state officials, the solution that they have presented is to simply close them down. In May, 2013 the Chicago Board of Education voted to close 50 public schools down. This impacted 30,000 students, and may I remind you that most of those who are and will be affected are minorities. Also something to keep in mind, is this not only will affect the students but educators as well, that will be without work.
This has been the largest school closings ever in the United States history. The reason for these schools closing in Chicago is the same sad story that public schools have always had no school funding. Now this is acceptable and is something that is really important and valid when it comes to running a city and even an education system, but how exactly was Rahm able to raise $15 million dollars for his run off race for mayor this year, in a matter of months, but wasn't able to raise money for our schools? As I read my research and I continue finding many sources on how education systems really work and what brings it down, I can't help but think about how much money the Mayor of Chicago, was able to pull money out of nowhere to make useless ad’s that lasted all of 3 months, if that, but we have been struggling not only in the City of Chicago but cities everywhere to come up with funds. Not only is this information frustrating but it just goes to show that we as a community, locally, nationally, and even globally need to be educated on what is going on!

Another frustrating situation is that CPS just announced that Barbara Bennett, the CEO of Chicago Public Schools has been suspended because of a $20.5 million contract that is being investigated for criminal activity. Cps says that they have insufficient funds and that is why the majority of school closing happens as well as budget cuts. However, this proves differently. This woman was sitting in the office and signed a contract that was not in our best benefit and she knew this. It is fortunate to hear that they will be investigating things, but it doesn't solve much. There will always be people who will only work when it comes to their benefit. Instead of having the students and teachers on their mind they will continue to throw us in the dirt. I have promised myself that I will no longer stand on the sidelines and wonder all these questions on why our education is not equal, but I will do something and take action on it. And even though it took me until my last year being enrolled in the public education system, I will still continue to educate and fight against these injustices because when I grow up and when my children or any child for that matter, grows up I want to be able to send them to a school that focuses on education rather than competition and focuses on being able to send their children to public schools without the worries of whether or not they are being taught what they deserve.
