Action Plan
I am eighteen years old, waiting to cross stage in less than a month and a half. I have been enrolled in the public education system of Chicago all my life, also known as CPS. At the age of four or five, I witnessed my aunt, and close family friends who I consider to be family, hunger strike for nineteen days, just so me and cousins would be able to sit in a classroom environment and get the education we deserve. For that I will forever be grateful, that they along with other community members, were able to come together and make their voice heard, when everyone was pushing them to the side like they didn't deserve a voice. I remember my freshman year, sitting in English class, were we learned about our school history, and my English teacher asked what exactly we wanted to leave behind at Social Justice High School as a legacy. I don't remember what I wrote down, but all that I can think of is now, and that is that I want to educate people. Although educating people is not something that is not a physical object, education and being educated is something that no one will ever be able to take from you. Many times we are blinded by the lies and the stereotypes that we do not see what injustice is being done to us, but this is where we have to start. We need to start educating one another so that we learn we have a voice. I am so thankful for my family members who fought for me to attend a high school, because this high school would forever leave a print in my heart. Social Justice High School has taught me many things; one of the biggest is that my voice matters. The second most important thing is that if we want change, it won’t happen in a blink of an eye, it will only happen through hard work and dedication. It will not be easy, nor will it be fun, but we need change. |
I have big dreams that one day everyone will be able to get an education without the idea that they can't be successful because of the color of our skin or even where we live, schools will not define who we are through bubbles ranging from a-d on a piece of Scranton paper. One the school systems will be on our side as well as the whole nation. I want to be able to reform our education system so that we can all be educated weather you're from this country or not. We should eliminate all standardized testing, or majority of them, and get everyone in the country on the same place. By doing so the first step is educating people so that we can make this possible. And this is what I vow to do.
