Attending a Chicago Public School is rather a love hate relationship. Inside the halls I walk in particular I am privileged to have few dedicated teachers who believe in us as students but more importantly in teaching us to not be oblivious about what is happening in our city. Although I may have teachers who are all for quality education some of the Chicago board member that work for CPS are not. The Chicago Public schools would now be taking a new test come the 2014 2015 school year. The test would be called Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) testing starting at the third year of school.
This brand new standardize test would begin to add more fuel to the CPS fire as it is a battle between students and PARCC. Although students can opt out on the new test it affects them when wanting to attend selective enrollment high schools and funds. So what is happening is a student refuses to sit in front of a computer screen taking a restless amount of test over the course of three days they will be penalized individually and as a student attending that school funds will decrease based on who actually selects an answer choice. Not only that but schools with low test score will be looked at risk schools because students can prove that the material that is being asked is not up to standard. What is even sadder than having another standardize test is that the students are being tested on mathematics and English material that they have little to no experience in. Basically, what this test is setting up are students to already receive low scores due to the lack of experience with the given subjects. This is a very serious issue because the federal government has threatened to cut funds to many of the schools that students refuse to take them . This being said if Chicago Public Schools are already lacking funds they will have to overcome hurdles if they students cannot grasp these test by the time they are given. Creating a downward affect leaving CPS schools with less money because some students refuse to take another test. Hearing that not only another standardize test was created but hearing even the people who are supposed to what is best for us, the government, is willing to remove funds if students score low or refuse to take it. Overall it goes to show how much people in power are not willing to help minorities prosper into the scholars they we can potentially be.
